Defending Their Lives

Welcome to the Past Lives Pavilion!

In our next class, we will talk about the rhetorical triangle, rhetorical appeals, and more.  The terms we use might be new to you, but I'll bet you're more familiar with the basic techniques than you realize.  We all tend to break out our best rhetorical moves when defending ourselves or justifying our actions.  Now, I could ask you to get into some kind of major trouble and then explain yourself, but WSU lawyers have counseled me against that.  So instead, I will ask you to defend someone else.

Choose a public figure or celebrity who has fallen from grace and/or met with some sort of scandal (think of Tiger Woods; former mayor Kwame Kilpatrick; Michael Vick; Bill Clinton).  Then defend his or her actions, explaining why we should think better of this person than we do.  Tell his/her side of the story - justify what he/she did!

Responses should be a minimum of 250 words. Paste your response into the wiki comment box below.  Your best bet is to compose the response in a word processing program (such as Microsoft Word) and then paste it into the comment box when you're done. Be sure to be logged in to the wiki (using your username and password) when making a comment, so we can identify whose comment it is.  Responses must be submitted by 5:00pm on Tuesday, September 7.
