"So What?  Who Cares?" - Saying Why It Matters

(Chapter 7)

Templates for Indicating Who Cares (pgs. 95-96):

  • These findings challenge the work of earlier researchers, who tended to assume that ______.
  • If sports enthusiasts stopped to think about it, many of them might simply assume that the most successful athletes ______.  However, new research shows ______.
  • Recent studies like these shed new light on ______, which previous studies had not addressed.
  • But who really cares?  Who besides me and a handful of recent researchers has a stake in these claims?  At the very least, the researchers who formerly believed ______ should care.

Templates for Establishing Why Your Claims Matter (pgs. 98-99):

  • Although X may seem trivial, it is in fact crucial in terms of today's concern over ______.
  • These conclusions / This discovery will have significant applications in ______ as well as in ______.
  • Ultimately, what is at stake here is ______.
  • If we are right about ______, then major consequences follow for ______.

A Template Combining the Two (pg. 99):

  • Although X may seem of concern to only a small group of ______, it should in fact concern anyone who cares about ______.

How can you use this in Project Three (and beyond)?

Why Does Your Project Three Matter: An Exercise

  1.  Revisit your Project Three rough draft.
  2. Locate your conclusion.  (Don't yet have a conclusion?  Use this opportunity to write an effective one.)
  3. Consider the following questions:
    1. Does your conclusion say who cares (or who should care) about your argument?
    2. Does your conclusion indicate why these people care?
    3. Does your conclusion explain why your argument is important?
  4. Review the "They Say/I Say" templates and (in a separate Word document) revise your conclusion so that it explicitly answers these questions.

My Title for the Section on Titles

Examples of Title Fail:

  • "Project Two" - titling your paper the assignment number
  • "Definition Paper" - titling your paper the assignment task
  • "Hamlet" - titling your paper the work being discussed
    • Someone already wrote this work - and it wasn't you.
  • Not titling your paper at all

What should your title be accomplishing?

Naming your Project Three: An Exercise

  1. Write a one-word title—the most obvious one possible.
  2. Write a less obvious one-word title.
  3. Pick out of the essay some concrete image—something the reader can hear, see, taste, smell, or feel—to use as a title.
  4. Think of a familiar saying, or the title of a book, song, or movie, that might fit your essay.
  5. Take the title you just wrote and twist it by changing a word or creating a pun on it.
  6. Find two titles you've written so far that you might use together in a double title. Join them together with a colon [ : ].
  7. When you've finished, post your 6 Project Three titles and your revised conclusion as a comment below.

Our state is in a serious crisis mode that involves an overload of homeless people and trash in our streets, and it is about time that the government takes the problem in their own hands and finds a way to eliminate the high percent of people living in poverty in our very own state. Ultimately, what is at stake here is our states collective well being. A more educated society will change Michigan for the better that might last a lifetime. It is important for you to begin your term as governor of Michigan with a clear purpose in solving our state’s most desperate problem, and with the solution I offered, it can be done.

You would think that by now we would stop being so careless, so reckless, so destructive but the death toll continues to climb everyday. Animals are losing the small amount of refuge that they have left. We as a people have almost eradicated a beast that if given a chance would devour us in minutes. Tigers. A species of cat that is so highly regarded by the Asian people that a form of martial arts was created based on the creature. Soon this animal as well as countless others will fall because of a sickness that only humans can carry. Selfishness. It doesn’t stop at animals though, there are tribes of people living in these forests that have had to leave the only place they’ve ever known because we needed to destroy their homeland for our benefit. The only way to help protect these animals, these people and this planet is if we band together and put a stop to using trees as our sole source of paper. We need to speak loud and we need to do it fast because by the year 2025 we may no longer have any rainforests remaining and we will have killed off so many beautiful creatures that we have grown to love just because we didn't stop doing the obvious and just try an alternative method to using trees as paper.

6.We are the decision Makers
7.In conclusion the American voters are the decision makers in who gets the vote for position. I think that it is wrong that they are being misinformed and because of misinformation they are voting for someone who they feel can do the right thing when in all they are voting under false pretenses. The candidates should focus more on what they can do to change certain situations than trying to bash the other candidate with the things that they have done wrong. Keeping the voters informed of the correct information can make decision making a lot easier, because they know the truth behind the candidate.

6. Just Breathe: What is Stress and How Does One Reduce it?
7. But who really cares? Who besides me and a handful of recent researchers has a stake in these claims? At the very least, every individual that goes to college should care about stress, and how to reduce it because every college student deals with stress at one point or another. Many people are feeling the effects of stress because more and more stress is being put on people not only in school-work, but also in the search in finding a job after you finish school. If one does not deal with their stress, and learn how to reduce it, serious health problems could come up, and those problems could end your life. If there is anything that you learn from this reading, it should be how to save yourself from the horrors of stress.

In conclusion, the use of performance enhancing drugs by professional athletes is unethical and it allows them to have an unfair advantage over their competition. Ultimately, what is at stake here is the loss of the integrity of professional sports. As Americans, we take much pride in the sports that we watch or even participate in. To eliminate this problem, we must simply bring this argument to be of the uttermost importance so that it becomes a very big deal and stirs up a lot of controversy and in turn, those that are in control of deciding the disciplinary action of athletes will begin to ban those that are caught with illegal performance enhancing drugs in their system from the sport in which they participate in.

In conclusion, texting while driving ultimately is a major problem that proves to be dangerous and fatal at times. The reduction of reaction time and increase in distraction leads to an increase in accidents. But, who really cares? Who besides me? The department of transportation along with individuals who text and drive should care, at the very least. Texting while driving comes down to the drivers and the department of transportation is in a way responsible for resolving this issue. There are many solutions out there already but these need to be taken a little further as illustrated. For example, technology that is available needs to be available to everyone.

3. Cruising down the street
4. Hands Free Driving

I know how it feels to be hurt deep inside, but I’m not sure how it feels to lose a love one, but at the end of the day we are all human beings and we are all somehow related to each other and that is we are all Americans living together as diverse country. I know the September 11 attacks hurt you guys and put the Islamic community to shame because of the incident. All I would like to say to all the families involved in the attack is that not all Muslims are terrorists and we don’t like to blow up buildings because we are people, who came to America so we can live in peace and so we can have better lives. The attacks that took place wasn’t our fault because no one knew it was coming even we were shocked that something like this could happen. At the end of the day we are all people and we should understand each other through knowing each other rather than through hat

inconclusion, living in the city of Detroit we all know at sometime in our live we may have to go the hospital. We as a residents of the city need paramedics to help us when we are sick. i feel so sad because sometime residents are dying due to the high volume phone calls, when 9-1-1 is busy. me living in Detroit i know because often time paramedic take between twenty minute to twenty five minute. The only way the residents is going to solve this,we have to go in to the mayor office and declare help. we as residents is no different than any one else let us go out and make a diffrent to those is sick than watching someone die.
